While out today, enjoying the turning of the aspens, we came upon a small herd of elk grazing in a meadow. Because I was interested in observing their behavior, we watched them for some time....and of course, I took about 50 pictures!! Elk are a more social animal than deer, so are most often found in herds. It was interesting to watch the alpha female guide the others around, as the big daddy looked on. He was quite impressive, and his bugle call was very nice. It was interesting to watch his body movements as he bugled....rather like he had something stuck in his throat!! They grazed for a long time as we watched, and then when something obviously spooked the alpha, she turned and ran, with the others falling into line behind her immediately. The bull took up the rear, until they reached the edge of the clearing, where she then stopped.....and he came up to the front...as if she was saying, okay....now you can once again behave as if YOU are in charge!!!! We all know who was in charge, though!!
